Hovannes Tumanyan- Poet of All Armenians
Hovhannes Tumanyan is one of our most beloved storytellers. Our parents and grandparents grew up on Tumanyan’s classics, including “Sevuk Oolik, sirun Balik.” His fairy tales depict life in Armenian villages and convey essential values and virtues.
Tumanyan’s works are remarkable for their simplicity, naturalness, and poetic inspiration. Phrases and expressions from his works have become a part of everyday language that Armenians still use.
Tumanyan was born in the beautiful region of Lori, where he was immersed in his people’s fairy tales, fables, and legends. You’ll be transported to magical places and meet wondrous characters when you read his works. Tumanyan is renowned as the “Poet of All Armenians.”
INFO: There are two museums of Tumanyan in Armenia, one in his birthplace Dsegh in the province of Lori, and another in Yerevan.
Armenian composers created music of different genres based on Tumanyan’s works – from songs to opera and ballet. Armenian composer Arshak Tigranyan wrote the first Armenian national famous opera, “Anush” based on Tumanyan’s poem “Anush”
