KOMITAS-the founder of the Armenian national music school
Komitas is the founder of the Armenian national music school. But he wasn’t always known as Komitas. He was named Soghomon Soghomonian when he was born. As a young boy, he moved to Etchmiadzin, the religious center of Armenia, where he received his education to become a priest. At 25, he was ordained as a Vardapet, a celibate priest, and changed his name to Komitas.
Komitas had a passion for music and possessed an exceptional voice. He pursued his musical studies at the private conservatory and university in Berlin, Germany’s capital. Upon returning to Armenia, he used his expertise to study and transcribe the country’s musical traditions.
Komitas dedicated most of his life to studying and developing Armenian folk music – what Armenians sang and still sing in different villages and countries worldwide. He traveled extensively to listen to and record Armenian folk songs and dances, collecting and preparing over 3,000 pieces of Armenian folk music, preserving these invaluable musical treasures for future generations. Komitas’ efforts led to the creation a new system of harmony based on the unique characteristics of Armenian folk music.
Thanks to Komitas’ contributions, Armenian music has become an essential part of the country’s cultural heritage and a source of pride for Armenians worldwide.
Info: Komitas composed many songs for children. Kakavik is one of the most popular among them.
